Andy Hadfield Realising Ambition

Andy Hadfield is a recently retired Army officer with over 37 years of leadership experience, from front-line operations to global training missions. He began his journey at 18, straight from a comprehensive school in Lichfield, and rose through the ranks to lead teams of up to 550 people in some of the world’s most demanding environments – including the Gulf War, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, and Kosovo. He’s been decorated for gallantry and leadership by both the UK and the United States, earning a Mention in Despatches, a Queen’s Commendation, and a Bronze Star.

Andy’s story is one of grit, growth, and grounded leadership. He didn’t go to university straight away – instead, he carved a path through sheer belief, adaptability, and commitment. He knows what it’s like to feel like the underdog, and he shows students that they can achieve remarkable things – no matter where they start.

Now a leadership consultant, coach and mentor, Andy’s Lead from Within workshop is packed with real-world lessons in courage, responsibility, and finding purpose. His down-to-earth delivery, humour, and authenticity make him instantly relatable, especially for students navigating life choices, pressure, and uncertainty.

This talk supports students in developing their SPARK:

  • Self-Awareness: Andy encourages students to reflect on who they are, what drives them, and how their past does not define their future.
  • Purpose: Through stories of his own turning points and personal challenges, Andy helps students connect effort, values, and long-term goals.
  • Awareness: Students learn how to adapt their behaviour and mindset to different situations, understanding the value of empathy and perspective-taking in leadership.
  • Resilience: With lived examples from combat zones to sailing races, Andy shows how to remain calm under pressure, learn from failure, and keep moving forward with integrity.
  • Kindness: Andy’s leadership style is inclusive and empathetic – reminding students that strength and compassion go hand in hand.

The session is especially impactful for students preparing for their next steps – whether it’s exams, higher education, apprenticeships, or entering the world of work. Andy brings a powerful message: you don’t have to be the loudest or the fastest – but if you believe in yourself, stay adaptable, and work hard, you can lead your own life with courage and clarity.
